How to choose a classified ads WordPress theme: a checklist
A classifieds theme decides what your users can post, find and pay for. Here is what to test on a live demo before you buy, with a checklist you can tick.
In this guide
- Test a classifieds theme on a live demo, not on its feature list
- Each category needs its own form, fields and search filters
- Paid packages, featured ads and moderation should be built in
- Ask who gives support, for how long, and who fixes your site
- A ready theme is the fastest way to test a classifieds idea
To choose a classified ads WordPress theme, test it the way your users and you will use it. Post an ad, search for it, pay for a package and approve the ad as the admin. Then find out who updates the theme and who answers when something breaks.
The checklist below works for any classifieds theme. We make Listivo, so we name no other theme, and many points link to the Listivo demo or help center. Once you have picked a theme, our guide to building a classified ads website takes you through the setup.
The classified ads WordPress theme checklist
This is how to choose a classifieds theme without trusting a feature list. Tick the points you can see on the demo. The settings for fields, packages and moderation sit in the admin, so test those on a trial site.

A car should ask for make and model, and a flat for rooms.

Look for number, price, location and gallery fields.
Types of custom fields -
Mileage belongs to cars, not to sofas.
The field dependency on the custom field -
Picking a make should leave only its models in the next list.

Look for big photos, the price and clear ways to reach the user who posted.

Ask which maps it supports. In Listivo the map can run on free OpenStreetMap, but address search needs a Google key.

Pins on a map help visitors who search near them.

Users
-
Users should manage their ads without writing to you.
Navigating user panel - video tutorial -
Shops and agencies often need other packages than private users.

A chat on your own pages keeps the talk on your site.
Private message system
Money
-
A package should set the number of ads, the days live and the featured days.
Monetization system -
Featured ads show first in the results. A bump up moves a live ad back to the top.
Featured ads vs bump up: what to sell on your classifieds site -
A plan gives a shop a set number of ads and renews by itself. In Listivo, plans need Stripe.
Subscriptions (Membership) - how to configure -
Listivo takes payments through WooCommerce payment plugins. Check that one exists for your provider.

Safety
-
New ads should wait for you, and edited ads should come back to you.

SMS codes are a paid service. In Listivo, they go through a paid Twilio account.

Running the site
-
Check it on your phone, not only on a fast computer.
-
Fewer required plugins mean fewer updates and fewer conflicts.
-
Regular releases show that someone still works on the theme.
Changelog -
Your own code belongs in a child theme, so an update does not undo it.
Updating Listivo: what to expect and how to do it -
Look for one place to translate every text. Arabic needs right-to-left pages. Listivo runs one language per site.

Updates should keep working when support ends.

An answer by email helps. A fix on your own site helps more.
What Premium Support covers
Five tests to run before you buy
1. Post an ad in two categories
A classifieds site lives on its posting form. Post a test ad on your phone and time it. A good theme asks each category only for its own details.
Those details also become the search filters, so a weak form means a weak search. On the Listivo demo, the form changes as soon as you pick a category.
2. Search the way your visitors will
Test search with the words your visitors would type, such as a brand or a town. Watch for suggestions as you type. Visitors leave a slow search fast.
Then open a busy category and look at its filters. On the Listivo demo, every option shows its number of ads, and a make leaves only its own models.
3. Pay for a package as a test user
Your income comes from what users pay for, so test the checkout yourself. Then find your paid ad in the search and check that it stands out.
In Listivo, you set the names and prices of packages, and users pay at checkout. Payments run through the WooCommerce payment plugin of a provider that works where you live.
4. Approve a test ad as the admin
Fake ads find every open posting form sooner or later. A user can also change an ad after you approve it. Check that an edited ad comes back to you.
Listivo has moderation with a list for moderators, a Google bot check and SMS phone checks. The full setup is in how to stop spam and fake ads on a classifieds website.
5. Find out who answers, and for how long
A theme needs updates long after you buy it, because WordPress and plugins keep changing. Check what support covers, not only how long it lasts.
Listivo is made and updated by a team that has written WordPress themes since 2015. Buy it on tangiblewp.com and you get lifetime updates and 12 months of Premium Support from the people who wrote it.
On ThemeForest, item support lasts 6 months and covers questions and bug reports, not installation or server problems. Both places to buy are compared in buy a theme on ThemeForest or from its authors.

Post, search and approve test ads on your own Listivo site
Set up fields and moderation with the full WordPress admin, on a site that is ready in a minute.
Try Listivo free Free for 7 days. No card needed.Warning signs when you compare themes
- One posting form for every category
- Features in the demo that each need a paid add-on
- No changelog, or no release in the past year
- Required plugins for jobs the theme says it does itself
- No way to export your ads if you leave
The only plugins Listivo requires are Contact Form 7, Elementor and Listivo Core. Packages are built in, and WooCommerce with a payment plugin takes the payments.
Outside services add costs, such as a paid Twilio account for SMS. A Google Maps key needs billing, and its free monthly credit covers most sites.
Classified ads plugin, theme or custom build?
A plugin adds ads to the theme you have, and its ad pages have to fit that theme.
How long each way takes and who does the work
| Ready theme | Plugin on your theme | Custom build | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | Days | Weeks | Months |
| How you pay | Usually one payment | The plugin, on top of your theme | A price for the project |
| Keeps the theme you have | No | Yes | No |
| Ad pages match the rest of the site | Yes | Partly | Yes |
| Who changes the design | You, without code | You or a developer | A developer |
| Who answers when it breaks | The theme's authors | Two teams | The team that built it |
| Who keeps it updated | The theme's authors | Two teams | Your developer |
A ready theme fits a founder who wants to test the idea on a real site within days.
A custom build makes sense when your idea needs what the theme cannot do. Listivo, for example, lets users pay you for their ads, but not pay each other. Compare the three paths in build it yourself, hire a developer, or have it built for you.
Not sure which kind of site you need? Start with classifieds, marketplace or directory.
Rather have us build it?
Fields, packages and moderation all take time to set up. If you would rather spend it on users and ads, the people who wrote Listivo can build the site.
Custom Website
Photos, your logo and a few words are enough. We design and write the whole website, and you pay only when you approve it.
