How to make money with a classified ads website

A classifieds website earns when users pay to post more ads or to be seen first. Here are six ways to charge, which one to start with, and a calculator for your numbers.

In this guide
  • A classifieds site earns when users pay for more reach, not when visitors search
  • A Listivo site can sell packages, featured days, bumps and monthly plans
  • Start with free posting, add featured days and bumps, then charge for posting
  • Businesses that post every week are the best fit for monthly plans
  • The calculator turns your own numbers into a month and a year

How to make money with a classified ads website comes down to one rule. Let people post for free or cheaply, then charge the users who want more reach. They pay for ad packages, featured days, a move to the top or a monthly plan.

The order matters, because nobody pays to stand out on an empty site. If your site is not built yet, start with our guide on how to create a classified ads website.

The classified ads business model

Visitors come to a classifieds site to find something, and they never pay to search. The money comes from the people who post. They pay for more ads, more days online or a better place in the results.

Your site takes no share of a sale
Buyers cannot pay for an item in an ad through your site, so users settle each deal between themselves. Your site takes payments only for what you sell, such as packages, bumps and plans.

Private users post a few ads a year and pay small amounts, if they pay at all. Businesses such as car dealers, real estate agents and shops often post every week. They are the users most likely to pay every month.

Use one way to earn on its own, or mix several on the same site.

Six ways a classifieds site makes money

Each card says who pays and links the help article with the settings.

  1. Paid ad packages

Users pick a package before the ad goes live. It sets how many ads it holds, how long they stay online, and their featured days and bumps.

    Paid by anyone who posts

    Monetization system
  2. Featured ads

A featured ad shows first in results sorted by Most Relevant and carries a Featured label. Users can also add featured days to an ad that is already live.

Paid by users who want more views

    Featured Packages
  3. Bump up, or move to top

A bump moves a live ad back to the top of the results, though featured ads still show first. Users buy one bump or a pack, and a package can bump an ad on a schedule.

Paid by users whose ad has slipped down

Monetization - Bump Up (Manual and Automatic)
  4. Monthly plans through Stripe

A monthly plan gives a set number of ads, featured days and bumps. Stripe renews it every month, and users can switch plans in their Settings.

Paid by users who post every month

Subscriptions (Membership) - how to configure
  5. Offers for business accounts

Users sign up as private or business accounts. A package or a monthly plan can be limited to one type, so shops get an offer made for them.

Paid by shops, dealers and agencies

Type of user accounts - private or business
  6. Free posting with paid upgrades

Posting stays free for everyone, so the site fills up faster. Users pay only for upgrades, such as featured days and bumps.

Paid by users who want more reach

Free Package, Free Registration, Free Subscription and WooCommerce Coupons

How to make money with a classified ads website, in four stages

You do not need all six on day one. Here is an order that suits a new site, and each stage starts when the one before it works.

1. Fill the site with free ads

An empty site earns nothing, so make posting free at the start. Listivo has four ways to make posting free or cheaper, and you can use more than one.

  • An always-free package that anyone can use
  • A free pack of ads for every new user
  • A free monthly plan, which needs Stripe
  • WooCommerce coupons that lower the price of a package

Keep posting quick as well. A user can write the ad first and sign up at the end, and this is on by default. For more ways to fill the first categories, read how to get the first ads on a new classifieds website.

2. Sell featured days and bumps once ads arrive every day

Upgrades cost nothing to users who do not want them, so you can switch them on early. They start to sell once new ads arrive every day and push older ones down. A user opens My Ads, clicks Promote or Bump up next to an ad, and pays at checkout.

My Ads list with two live ads, each with Edit, Delete, Promote and Bump up buttons, next to an order summary for one bump
In My Ads, each live ad has a Promote and a Bump up button, and a bump is paid at checkout.

Featured ads sell best where one reply is worth a lot, such as cars or homes. Bumps sell best where cheap ads sink fast, such as phones or clothes. Our guide to featured ads vs bump up shows how to price each one.

3. Start charging for posting

Once your main categories fill several pages and users post again without being asked, start charging for posting. Turn off the always-free package and keep the free pack for new users, so newcomers still post for free. A paid package can also be limited to some categories, such as cars or homes.

Packages are the classic form of paid listings. Two or three are enough, like the Standard, Featured and Featured Max packages in the picture below. You choose the names and the prices.

Users pick a package with its days online, featured days and bumps, then pay at checkout.

Users pay at a WooCommerce checkout, through the payment plugin you pick. Free and paid plugins exist for many providers, so choose one that works where you live. Our guide on how to create a website like OLX sets up packages as its third step.

4. Offer monthly plans to businesses

When shops and agents post every week, sell them a monthly plan. One payment a month is simpler for them than buying a package each time, and it gives you income you can plan around.

Limit the paid plans to business accounts, so private users keep the simple packages. Start with two plans, a small one and a large one, and add a third only when shops ask for it.

Choose a subscription screen with FREE, PRO and ELITE monthly plans, next to the My Orders list with a completed order
Each monthly plan sets its ads, days online, featured days and bumps, and a paid plan shows in My Orders.

Plans need Stripe, and they renew monthly, with no yearly option. Coupons work for packages, not for plans.

Work out your classifieds website revenue

Type your own numbers, and start low, because most ads on a new site are free.

A month

800

A year

9,600

In your own currency. Packages bought plus upgrades sold, before payment fees and taxes.

The result grows with the number of ads as much as with the price. A higher price often lowers the share of users who pay, so when you raise a price, lower that share too.

The result is income, not profit. Payment providers keep a fee from each payment, and optional SMS phone checks need a paid Twilio account. Google Maps needs a key with billing, though a free monthly credit covers most sites.

Five mistakes that cost a new classifieds site money

  • Charging for every ad before the site has visitors
  • Offering six packages when two or three would do
  • Featuring so many ads that the Featured label means nothing
  • Counting on banner ads alone, which pay little on a small site
  • Forgetting payment fees and running costs when you add up your income

Banner space can still bring extra money once traffic is steady. A local garage or school may pay for a spot on your home page. You place the banner in Elementor like any other block.

Questions

Do classified ads websites still make money?
Yes, when they serve one niche or one area well. A general site for a whole country is hard to start, but a focused site can be the first place people look. Start from the demo closest to your niche. See all Listivo demos
Do I need Stripe to take payments?
Only for monthly plans, which renew through Stripe. Packages, featured days and bumps are paid at a WooCommerce checkout, through the payment plugin you pick. If Stripe does not work in your country, start with packages and a provider that works where you live. Monetization – WooCommerce Payments Gateways
Where do I see who pays for a monthly plan?
In the Listivo Panel, the User Subscriptions tab lists each user with the monthly plan they bought. Users see what they paid in My Orders. Subscriptions (Membership) - how to configure
Can I change my prices later?
Yes. You set the name and the price of every paid package, and you can edit or delete packages in the Listivo Panel. Start low, see what sells, then adjust. Monetization system
How long until a classifieds website makes money?
It depends on how fast ads and visitors arrive, so plan for months, not weeks. Most income starts when users post every day and older ads need a push. Category pages that show up on Google bring visitors you do not pay for. SEO for a classifieds website: category pages that rank
