Multilevel custom field

A multilevel taxonomy field lets a listing sit under a category and one of its subcategories — Electronics, then Computers. This guide switches the option on and shows what changes for visitors browsing your site.

This article will teach you how to establish a new custom field with a multilevel option.

  1. 1 Add a new custom field

The first step is to add a new custom field. Go to Listivo Panel -> Custom Fields -> Add New Field.

The Custom Fields screen of the Listivo panel with the Add New Field button highlighted and an arrow pointing at Custom Fields in the sidebar.
  2. 2 Set the type to Taxonomy

Write down your field name and set the type as Taxonomy. Only this field type allows selecting the multilevel option.

The Add New Field form with arrows pointing at the Name box, the Type dropdown set to Taxonomy, and the Add Field button.
  3. 3 Edit the field

Find your new field on the custom fields list and edit it.

The custom fields list with a long arrow pointing at the Edit button in the Category row.
  4. 4 Tick Multilevel

Set the check-box Multilevel. Search Logic will be permanently set to "and" and Allow Multiple Values will be checked — those options are required and are set automatically.

The Edit Field form for the Category field with the ticked Multilevel checkbox highlighted, Search Logic greyed out at AND, and Allow Multiple Values marked as always enabled for multilevel taxonomy.

Example

The category field is set as Multilevel. Users can choose the category Electronics and then select a subcategory, like Computers.

The search results sidebar with Category showing All (0) and Electronics (4), followed by a subcategory list — Any (4), Computers (2), Games & Consoles (1), Phones (1), Software (0) — beside four Electronics listings.

The category field isn't set as Multilevel. Users can choose the category Electronics and then there are no further options.

The same search page with the Category filter reduced to a single Electronics dropdown and no subcategory list, beside the same four Electronics listings.
