How to Customize Texts for Custom Fields and Placeholders

Rename the custom fields on your MyHome search form, translate their options such as For Sale or Apartments, and change the placeholder text shown inside each field.

2 minute read

This guide explains how to customize the text for custom fields (e.g. Offer Type, Property Type) and their options, such as "For Sale," "For Rent," and "Apartments." It also covers how to change placeholders, like the "Keyword" field that displays "What are you looking for?" by default on your search form.

1. Changing field names

To change field names like "Offer Type" or "Property Type" on your search form:

The search results page of a MyHome site, with the Offer Type and Property Type headings in the filter sidebar outlined in green, above their Any, For Sale, For Rent, Apartments and Houses options.
Field names are global
A field name is not set per page — change it once and the new name is used everywhere the field appears.

Go to MyHome Panel > Custom Fields and edit the fields you want to change.

The Custom Fields screen in MyHome Panel, listing Offer Type, Property Type, Price, Rent Price, Region, Subregion and Bedrooms with their slugs and types, and an arrow pointing at the Edit button next to Offer Type.

Here, you can update the name and the slug (the part of the URL related to that field).

The Edit Field screen with arrows pointing at the Name field, which reads "Offer Type", and the Slug field below it, which reads "offer-type".

2. Translating field options

To change options for taxonomy fields, such as "For Sale" and "For Rent" on the search form:

A MyHome search form with the All, For Sale and For Rent tabs at the top and the Region dropdown open below, showing the Bronx, Brooklyn, Long Island and Manhattan terms with their result counts.

…or terms like "Apartments" and "Houses" on your search results page:

The filter sidebar on a search results page, with the Offer Type options (For Sale, For Rent, Sold) and the Property Type options (Apartments, Houses, Industrial, Land, Offices) outlined in green.

In wp-admin, hover over Listings and select the field options you want to modify.

The Listings entry in the WordPress admin menu with its submenu open: Listings, Add New Listing, Offer Type, Property Type, Region, Subregion and Features.

For example, after clicking Offer Type, you'll see a list of terms that you can edit or add to.

The Offer Type taxonomy screen: the Add New Offer Type form with Name, Slug and Description on the left, and the existing terms For Rent, For Sale and Sold on the right, with the Edit link under For Sale highlighted.

3. Changing search placeholders

To change field placeholders on the search form, open the page in Elementor and adjust the placeholder text for any fields.

The Elementor Edit Search Vertical panel with the Keyword field selected under Primary fields and its Placeholder set to "Test", which appears in the search bar of the preview beside it.

You can also change sidebar field placeholders that use the Control: Select option.

The Sidebar fields section of the Edit Search Vertical panel: the Property Type field is set to Control: Select with the Placeholder "Test", and the Property Type dropdown in the preview shows "Test".
