Favicon / Site Icon

Add a favicon to your site — the small icon browsers show in the tab, in bookmarks and in the WordPress mobile apps — using the standard WordPress Customizer.

1 minute read

The favicon is fully based on WordPress functionality, so you set it in the Customizer rather than in the theme options.

  1. 1 Open the Customizer

In /wp-admin/, go to Appearance > Customize.

The WordPress admin sidebar with the Appearance flyout menu open and Customize highlighted above Widgets, Menus and Header.
  2. 2 Choose Site Identity The Customizer sidebar headed "You are customizing MyHome", with the active theme listed as MyHome and Site Identity as the first section above Colors.
  3. 3 Select an image and upload it

In the Site Icon section, click Select image and upload your icon.

The Site Identity panel with the Site Title field reading MyHome, a Site Icon area reading "No image selected", and an arrow pointing at the Select image button.
  4. 4 Click Publish The same Site Identity panel after an icon has been uploaded, showing a browser-tab preview next to the icon thumbnail and an arrow pointing at the blue Publish button.
Prepare the file first
WordPress asks for a square site icon of at least 512 × 512 pixels, so crop your image before you upload it.
