How to create Backup?

Install UpdraftPlus, take a full backup of your site by hand, and then let the plugin repeat it every week and send the copy to Dropbox or Google Drive.

2 minute read

A backup is an important matter for our website. It is worth being prepared for various scenarios, and not having to remember to make a backup every day or every few days.

Below I show how to perform a backup and how to set up automatic backups using the UpdraftPlus plugin.

Install the plugin

Go to Wp-admin > Plugins > Add New and search for UpdraftPlus:

The WordPress Add Plugins screen with "updraft" typed in the search field, a green arrow pointing at it, and UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin as the first result among other UpdraftPlus add-ons.

Back up now, by hand

Once the plugin is activated we see this dashboard (you will find a link to it at Settings > UpdraftPlus Backups).

The UpdraftPlus Backup / Restore tab: Files and Database both read "Nothing currently scheduled", a blue Backup Now button sits on the right, and the existing backups list is empty.

To perform a backup, just click the "Backup Now" button. After a moment or a few minutes — it all depends on the size of our website — we get a ready backup that can be downloaded to your computer or uploaded directly using this plugin.

The UpdraftPlus "Take a new backup" dialog with the database and files checkboxes ticked, a note that the backup will not be sent to remote storage because none has been saved, and Backup Now and Cancel buttons.
A backup in progress: a blue progress bar labelled "Creating file backup zip (Plugins)" under the backup date, with links to show the log or stop.

After the process finishes you will see:

The Existing backups table with a single entry dated May 12, 2022, download buttons for Database, Plugins, Themes, Uploads and Others, and Restore, Delete and View Log actions.

Automatic backup

Go to the Settings section:

The UpdraftPlus Settings tab with the files and database backup schedules both set to Manual, retaining 2 backups, above a grid of remote storage options including Dropbox, Amazon S3, Google Drive, OneDrive and FTP.
Keep the copy off your own server
UpdraftPlus itself advises against leaving backups on the web server — pick a remote destination such as Dropbox or Google Drive so the backup does not sit next to the site it protects.

I like to store my backup on another service, such as Dropbox or Google Drive. We change the files and database backup schedule to weekly:

The same settings with both schedules changed to Weekly and Google Drive selected as remote storage; below, the Google Drive panel asks you to sign in with Google. Green arrows point at the schedule dropdowns and the Google Drive option.

And that's it — from now on, every 7 days the system will automatically make a backup and send it to Google Drive or another drive of your choice. You can also choose how many backups the system should keep.
